Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) has been selected by the Indianapolis Airport Authority as master designer for a new $939 million terminal at Indianapolis International Airport. The project represents the first U.S. airport terminal to be designed and built since last September.

The new airport project, scheduled for completion in July 2007, will feature a modern terminal built in the “midfield” area of the present airport, between the two main runways. HOK will provide a comprehensive design solution for the entire development, with a primary focus on developing a unique and compelling gateway experience for the Indianapolis air traveler.

Since the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, the firm has become a leader in airport terminal security planning, and is currently working to upgrade security at four U.S. airports: Boston Logan International Airport; Metropolitan Oakland International Airport; Orlando International Airport; and Ontario (California) International Airport.

“This project provides us with a tremendous opportunity to design an innovative and efficient terminal that will serve as a benchmark for U.S. airports,” says Pat Askew, HOK senior vice president and Aviation Group Director.

HOK was one of four firms asked to submit preliminary proposals for the project in March. Those four companies were culled from a list of more than two-dozen firms that submitted statements of qualifications in November 2001. The selection was based on evaluations of the proposals by Indianapolis Airport Authority board members, Airport staff, and local engineering and design consultants. The other firms that were included in the final review were HNTB; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP; and URS Corporation.

During the past five years, HOK’s Aviation Group has been responsible for more than 50 major terminal projects totaling more than $24 billion of airport construction throughout the world.
